Argyll rugby girls shine at development day

-

Mid Argyll RFC hosted a girls’ rugby development day in Lochgilphead last weekend, with it widely seen as a fantastic success.

The event at Lochgilphead’s Joint Campus was organised by Mid Argyll Women and Girls community coach, Drew Buckley and involved under-12 and under-14 players.

In the U12 programme, girls from Oban, Taynuilt, Campbeltown, Lochgilphead and Islay took part in four 10-minute games, with some coaching on key skills inbetween.

In the under-14 programme, there were teams from Oban, Mid Argyll, Lochaber, Ayr and Cambuslang, while two girls from Islay also joined up with Mid Argyll to get their first taste of competitive rugby.

Cambuslang were the strongest team on the day, with some really strong runners on their team helping them remain undefeated on the day.

Oban and Ayr were hard to separate with both teams winning two games each and playing out a 6-6 draw when they faced each other.

Ayr came in second place due to the difference in tries scored over the day but there was very little between the teams, while Mid Argyll and Lochaber showed glimpses of their potential through scoring some fantastic tries.

Elsewhere, the Oban under-15 boys were in action at the Stirling Sevens last Sunday putting some great effort into their matches against high quality opponents.

The team were unable to defeat Boroughmuir, Currie and Dundee, but improved with each game, with notable performances from Milo Llewelyn, Hamish Macintyre, Joe Corns, Cameron Crowe and Arran Martin. Unfortunately, Cameron and Arran sustained serious injuries and Oban Lorne RFC has wished them a speedy recovery.
