Five-star performance from Fort Reserves
Kyle 0 Fort William Reserves 5
Fort William fans might be forgiven of tiring of the cliché that good things come to those who wait but, as the Reserve side finally notched their first win of the campaign, they could certainly breathe a collective sigh of relief, writes Peter Newman.
Taking the Friday night trip to Kyle it was an excellent opportunity for the team, under the management of Paul MacInnes and assistant Matthew Prosser, to show that the improvements on the field could be translated into points on the board.
And it was not long before the team repaid that faith.
Liam Gilchrist wriggled past the centre half but was pulled to the floor for a penalty, duly dispatched. Then the dynamic Robbie Rydings was also tugged to the ground when through on goal. Another penalty made it 2-0, setting the tone.
Next, youngster Alfie Duncan played the ball down the wing, collected by Ryan Wilson. Cutting in from the flank he made no mistake in trebling the advantage.
The next goal came courtesy of some excellent collective teamwork. Combative pocket rocket forward Davie Neil took a shot which could only be parried by the Kyle keeper.
Calmly supporting his striker, Ruairidh Macdonald planted the rebound for his latest goal in a productive season.
Finally, Stephen Macphee bagged the goal of the day.
With the ball played forward, MacPhee produced an exquisite drive from the edge of the box for a beauty of a goal.
The result at final whistle was 5-0 in a five star performance.
Speaking after the game Matthew Prosser said: “The boys are starting to show on the pitch what they have learnt in training.
“A big thanks goes to Norman Macinnes, John Campbell and Andrew Bergan who have been along to assist us in running training sessions.
“Because of their vast experience and knowledge we are already seeing a change which is translating into improved performances and now some points as well.”
Fort William Reserves are on the road again this week with a trip to Portree on Saturday May 20, kick off 3pm.
