Rotary club on course to host 37th Oban Am Am
Three 180s help Brook nail win
Oban’s amateur golfers are preparing to team up for Oban Rotary Club’s Am Am competition at Glencruitten Golf Club on Sunday June 4.
The 37th edition of The Oban Times-sponsored competition will feature players from as far afield as Crieff, Dunblane, Glasgow and Stirling.
The event normally involves around 40 teams, with each team consisting of four golfers. The best two scores from each hole is counted.
Thanks to the generosity of the Glencruitten Golf Club committee and members, the course is again being made available for the annual running of the competition.
Since its debut in 1985, the event has raised almost £220,000 for local good causes, making it the main fundraiser for Oban Rotary Club and accounting for approximately 60 per cent of the charity’s annual fundraising.
Last year the Am Am raised more than £10,000, with all of the money benefiting charities.
The competition also helps to support popular events including the Highlands and Islands Music and Dance Festival, West Highland Tennis Week, the Winter Festival and Oban Charities Day.
It also supports other youth and sporting activities in the Oban area including school breakfast clubs and trips, Oban High School Pipe Band, the Laurinburg School Exchange and Glencruitten junior golf coaching. local
The Am Am relies on the co-operation and assistance of members and greenkeeping staff of Glencruitten Golf Club whose help is invaluable.
This year Rotary Club members will be assisted by the Sea Cadets who will help with the important role of ball spotting.
Last year, thanks to Rotary secretary Ciorsti Baxter and her Brownies, a raffle raised more than £850 which was donated to Mary’s Meals.
The club’s junior vice president Peter Tosh said: “We are very grateful for the continued support from McQueen Bros, J Smith of Connel and to many other local businesses who provide sponsorship and donations.
“A special thank you to our principal sponsor PDK Shellfish and also Aggregate Industries who, for the first time, has contributed towards the competition.”
Mr Tosh added: “We thank The Oban Times for reporting on Oban Rotary Club’s donations to local causes and for its financial support to the Am Am competition.”
Twenty-three players stepped up to the oche during another entertaining night of darts last Friday in the Oban & District Darts (ODD) League.
Greig Waddle and Roddy Morrison made their ODD debuts at the Lochavullin Bar with Adam Brook the eventual winner after some closely fought match-ups.
Sitting second in the overall standings for the season, Brook edged out Duncan MacMillan in an epic final after scoring three 180s.
There were also impressive performances from Iain MacArthur, who hit a 180, as well as Callum MacLean and Fagan McPhee, who both secured huge checkouts with 152 and 105 respectively.
The Player of the Week award went to Kenny Carmichael, who battled his way into the semi-finals on Saturday night after throwing great darts.
