New ‘quiet route’ pilot set for Glencoe

Creative Arts Festival to showcase UHI West Highland students’ work

-

A new “quiet route” with a reduced speed limit will be piloted outside Glencoe from Saturday July 1. Highland Council Lochaber area committee agreed that the single track road from the River Coe Bridge south-east to the outskirts of Glencoe Village, where it links with the A82, will see its speed limit drop from 60mph to 40mph. The pilot will last for 18 months.

Lochaber area committee chairperson, Councillor Kate Willis said: “The committee supports the introduction of the Glencoe quiet route pilot project, which aims to provide a safe low-traffic route that encourages more people to consider active travel for everyday journeys.

“The speed limit will be reduced on this single track route from 60mph to 40mph to encourage safe walking, cycling and horseback activities. It also aims to preserve the natural beauty of rural areas, whilst supporting access to the outdoors for everyone.”

Funding for the pilot is being fully provided by Transport Scotland, and includes consultation, signage, and monitoring. The project is being managed by HITRANS, with support from Highland Council.

An exhibition of work produced by UHI West Highland visual arts students will be displayed at the Fort William college centre from Tuesday May 30.

The Creative Arts Festival will display pieces created over the past academic year by fulltime and part-time students studying textiles, sewing and painting, as well as those on the HNC photography course. Opening night will feature an event with refreshments and live music from 5-7pm, and is open to the public.

Subsequent entry to the exhibition is on weekdays between 9am and 5pm, and will run until Friday June 30 at the Carmichael Way campus.

Sarah Bruce, curriculum area lead for creative arts, said of the exhibition: “The Creative Arts Festival is an exciting event in the UHI West Highland calendar for both students and staff.

“It is wonderful to see the culmination of everyone’s creative efforts across our centres, and to see the pride students have in displaying their work.
