Charities Day goes on parade

-

Oban will be a prime spot for celebrity spotting this Saturday when Charities Day comes to town, writes Kathie Griffiths.

Among familiar faces in the loosely-themed King’s Coronation parade could be Elvis, Simba from Lion King, Princess Leia from Star Wars even characters who frequent Coronation Street’s Rovers Return pub!

“Think out of the box! Play on the words! It’s just an opportunity to dress up, come on down and join the parade - and most importantly have a bit of fun!” says Oban and Lorn Lions Club president Nicola Wilson.

You do not have to have a stall or register to join in. Be at the Corran Halls for 12.45pm ready for Oban Pipe Band to lead the way to Station Square. There are prizes to be won.

The fun officially starts from noon until 4pm with lots of live entertainment including Oban FM and dancers.

“Bring down your groups, make a banner, bring your families, friends or just yourself. We are hoping for a big turn out,” said Nicola, who has been a big fan of Charities Day since childhood.

“Fairytale princesses and princes, kings of the jungle, Coronation chicken or Burger King – the dressing up options are endless. We’re looking forward to seeing how people interpret the theme!” added

Nicola.

Charities Day is traditionally a big earner for good causes and groups based in and around the town. More than 30 stalls, some familiar and some new, have signed up for stalls so far.

“Please bring your pennies and dig deep to show your support. People always give generously and it is much appreciated. Come and find out about the terrific work these groups and charities do in our community,” said Nicola.

Oban Lorn and Lions Club will also have a stall on the day and are hoping to attract new volunteers.

“It’s always a wonderful day. See you there!” added Nicola.
