Appin tapestry panel is ready

-

Appin’s contribution Highlands and islands project is complete.

A celebration was held at The Pierhouse Hotel, Port Appin, where stitchers met to work on their panel which will be joined with 51 other panels from different communities involving more than 650 volunteer stitchers ranging in age from two to 97 years.

The finished Spirit of the Highlands and Islands Tapestry will be exhibited within the newly-transformed Inverness Castle when it opens in 2025, as well as within community venues across the Highlands and islands.

Each community volunteer was invited to stitch their chosen story into the tapestry outline. The Appin stitchers chose Kilmartin Standing Stones.

The dedicated Appin group was led by the village’s talented textile artist and teacher Midge Gourlay and was supported by Appin Community Development Trust.

The Pierhouse Hotel to a tapestry hosted the stitchers for ten weeks from January to April and provided the development trust’s “warm hub” for people to go along and join in or just get together.

The Spirit of the Highlands and Islands Tapestry project is a partnership between Highland Council and High Life Highland delivered in collaboration with VisitScotland, as a unique way to tell stories of the area.

Midge said: “I am so pleased to see the Appin Panel completed. The dedication and creativity from our Appin Stitchers has been wonderful. Coming together each week to share ideas and stories has been such a highlight and we are excited to see our panel become part of the Spirit of the Highlands and Islands Exhibition.

“Thank you to the Appin Stitchers, the Pierhouse and to Appin Community Development Trust.”
