Visitor levy fears

-

A wave of uncertainty is sweeping through our tourism sector this week after Highland Council voiced its support for the Scottish Government’s Visitor Levy (Scotland) Bill.

If backed by MSPs, local authorities will be able to add a charge on all overnight accommodation, based on a percentage of the total costs. The bill will create a discretionary power for local authorities, applying in all or part of their area, to help fund relevant local activities and services.

The principle behind the levy is to help councils raise revenue to deal with the impact that a huge influx of people can have on local services, for example the impact of excessive traffic on small roads and the mess left behind by less-than-thoughtful visitors.

However, the impact such a move could have on tourism businesses already struggling in the wake of the pandemic must also be taken into consideration. Under the plans, councils will need to put the levy out to consultation, taking soundings from communities, businesses and organisations.

Visitor levies are common practice in major cities and tourist destinations around the world and for the most part are a great success. Let’s hope it can be in Lochaber.
