Cat charity on the prowl for more volunteers

-

A cat welfare charity is hoping to attract more volunteers.

Cats Protection’s Ardnamurchan and Mull branch, which also helps cats in and around Oban, is looking for an administration team leader and fundraising team leader.

It also hopes to recruit more foster carers, who look after cats until they find new homes and trap, neuter, return (TNR) volunteers, who help feral cats.

“I’d like to encourage any local people who love cats and would like to help the charity to consider helping us,” said Mauvis Gore, branch co-ordinator. “Volunteering for Cats Protection (CP) is a rewarding experience. Volunteers gain satisfaction from giving unwanted cats a second chance in life, so if this sounds of interest, please get in touch.”

TNR volunteers trap feral - wild living - cats, take them to the vets for health checking, neutering and then return them to their home site. This work is vital for the health of the cats and prevents litters of unwanted kittens. It also prevents ferals interbreeding with the Scottish Wildcat.

Foster carers look after needy cats and kittens in a CP-provided garden pen or in a dedicated room in their home until the cat finds a perfect home. CP provides equipment, training and support for all its roles.

The Ardnamurchan and Mull branch is part of Cats Protection’s national network of more than 250 volunteer-run branches and 34 centres that help around 190,000 cats and kittens each year.

Although the branch works hard to find new homes for the cats, the task is challenging because for every cat that finds a home, there are many more waiting to come in, hence the need for more volunteers.
