Community council

-

Glenfinnan Community Council (GCC) held its monthly meeting on Wednesday June 14 over Zoom and in the Jetty Hut.

Among the issues discussed were:

▮ Calendar: Sales are going well with 172 sold or accounted for. It was agreed a further 250 should be printed for Games Day.

▮ Fireworks: Stephen Carruthers attended the Phoenix training day in Kent on June 10. There was discussion about the fireworks being a public or village display. It was agreed it should remain a public event.

▮ One Tree Arboreal: No decision had been reached on trimming the tree or moving the War Memorial. Further discussion needed.

▮ Pier Road: The work by the Highland Council is still outstanding so Pauline Donaldson will contact the council for an update.

▮ National Trust for Scotland (NTS) Report - Emily Bryce: Ross McCarthey from Police Scotland seemed happy about doing a traffic policing “sting” on dodgy parking and would wait to hear from the community council on a suitable date. An NTS project manager has been assigned to work with the CC on the Glenfinnan project. Wendy Purvis will work on the project until the end of the year.

▮ Transport summit: Following the Anson Consultants’ report, a full day Transport Summit was held on June 9. The meeting was chaired by Kate Forbes MSP and was positive and useful. Ms Forbes agreed to convene another meeting in September.

▮ Double yellow lines survey and A830 update: The decision to paint double yellow lines from clearway to clearway is signed off. The work will likely take three weeks. The village had been surveyed about painting double yellow lines on Pier Road: 86 per cent of votes were in favour, 14 per cent were against. This appeared to give a mandate for painting double yellow lines on Pier Road.

It was agreed the lines on Pier Road should stretch for 50m, as agreed by Highland Council, but ideally as far as the passing place. It was also agreed the sign about motorhomes should be changed to read ‘Unsuitable for Motorhomes’.

Concern was expressed about pedestrian safety on Pier Road now Glenfinnan House Hotel is being used as a carpark. It was noted this is also used by children going to school. It was agreed that all issues would be raised with the council.

▮ Date of next meeting: Wednesday July 12.
