World’s eyes on Nevis bike event
Cyclists from around the globe are gearing up for a massive summer at the Nevis Range, writes Fiona Scott.
The UCI Cycling World Championships 2023,downhill mountain bike event takes place from August 3 to 5 – but this year with added gusto as Scotland hosts the entire event and the eyes of the world will be firmly fixed on the host locations.
The course at the Nevis Range in Fort William is considered one of the most mentally and technically challenging there is, stretching 2.8km long with a drop of 550m.
Riders taking on the course need to be strong, fit and fearless just to make it through the qualifying rounds.
The final will see them make their way down in reverse order of qualifying time, where fractions of a second determine their fate, with only the quickest winning the coveted Rainbow Jersey.
Councillor Ken Gowans, chairperson of Highland Council’s Economy and Infrastructure Committee, said: “With just four weeks or so to go until Lochaber hosts what could be considered the most thrilling element of the prestigious UCI Cycling World Championships, excitement is building across the area as people look to be part of the atmosphere and support the competitors.
“Fort William is no stranger to hosting elite downhill mountain biking events, however with this year’s event taking place in peak summer season it is expected to attract a wider following, opening opportunities for businesses and communities to soak up the wonderful atmosphere of world class competition.”
There will be some disruption during the event dates in the Fort William and the wider Lochaber area and people are asked to plan ahead and allow extra time for journeys.
Details of the affected routes, park and ride options and road closures will be communicated in advance of and throughout the event.
There will also be a host of ‘fringe’ style events happening across Lochaber in the lead-up to the championships, offering people the opportunity to learn more about cycling, mountain biking and the facilities on offer across the Highlands.
