Fort Reserves are on a roll
Fort Willian FC Reserves 8 Kyle 0 WHAFL
Fort William Reserves channelled their inner Octonauts as they put Kyle FC to the sword with eight unanswered goals in a rollicking performance of free-flowing football at Lochaber High School, writes Peter Newman.
Things began positively for the home side when Liam Gilchrist slotted a tidy finish into the bottom corner of the Kyle net to open the scoring.
Former South Lochaber Thistle and Fort first team youngster Ryan Henderson is returning to fitness and beginning to make his presence felt with the Reserves.
Here, he capitalised on an error by the Kyle keeper who raced out his box and squandered possession. Henderson capitalised and plundered a second goal to double the advantage.
As the half wound down, Graeme Laidlaw was next onto the scoresheet whipping an accomplished free kick into the top corner of the net to make it 3-0 at the half time whistle.
As the second half kicked off the Fort faithful were about to be sent into ecstasy.
Dynamic attacker Liam Martin gathered the ball in the half way area. Galloping forward, he played a smart one-two and, regathering the ball, slotted home for the fourth of the afternoon.
Ensuring that the game was a true five-star performance, 16-year-old Calum Maclean drove into the box and won a penalty. The youngster then made no mistake from the spot.
Better was to come, six of the best was administered by Martin as he bagged his second of the afternoon. However, off the bench came Blair Hamilton.
Once again, driving forward Hamilton scored the goal of the day, chipping the stranded keeper from the edge of the box for a champagne finish.
Hamilton was to also have the final say as he scored the side’s eighth goal to confirm his brace off the bench and seal the side’s third victory of the season.
Manager Paul Skinnick said: “We’re starting to click as a team now. We’ve been due a couple of wins and I just hope the boys can keep it going against Mallaig.”
Fort Reserves are next in action tomorrow night (July 4) away to Mallaig who host the Lochaber side having beaten Kyleakin 4-1 last time out. Kick-off at the High School Astro is at 7.30pm.
