Smashing performances
Oban High School pupils warmed up for Wimbledon at their annual tennis competition earlier this week.
More than 30 pupils participated in the tournament at Oban Tennis Courts, supported by the West Highland Tennis Tournament which had to be cancelled this year.
The event provided some thoroughly entertaining action, with matches involving sections for senior boys S4-S6, junior boys S1-S3 and a girls competition.
Sean Drummond won the senior boys tournament, defeating Innes MacCallum 6-3 in an excellent final, far right, which involved some punishing rallies and high quality performances from both.
David Simpson and George Pagan battled it out for third place in the age group, with George winning 6-5 in a closely fought contest.
In the junior boys competition, Louis Smyth and Ryan Cain slugged it out over a long match, with Louis eventually making it to the final where he lost 6-2 to Lewis MacMillan, inset.
Ryan could console himself with a third place finish after pipping Angus Dundas.
Meanwhile, Megan Carre triumphed in the girls event, going one better than her second place in last year’s final as she defeated Lily Robinson 6-2, with Isla Muir third, above.
There were also consolation draw winners, with Shaye Black winning in this category for the seniors and Joe Corns for the juniors, with Carrick Hobson and Daniel MacInnes respective runners-up.
Oban High School PE teacher Denise Gemmell praised the standard of play across all of the age groups.
She said: “Everyone taking part in the competition had an excellent day. There were big improvements as the event went on and the pupils became more confident on court. The quality of all of the finals was great, and most importantly the sportsmanship was first class.”
The Oban Tennis and Squash Club provide tennis coaching for all secondary school pupils on Sundays between 1pm and 2pm. Club memberships cost £39 per year.
