Artemis Macaulay Cup - first round

-

Oban Camanachd 4 Oban Celtic 0

Artemis Macaulay Cup holders Oban Camanachd were 4-0 winners over Oban Celtic in the second Oban derby of the season, with this firstround tie brought forward to Friday evening with a 6.45pm throw-up.

Oban Camanachd’s Daniel Cameron remained sidelined with a knee injury whilst Ross Macmillan was working. Lewis Cameron was a late call-off with a virus so Louie MacFarlane started in attack.

Celtic’s Jamie MacFarlane served a one-match suspension for a disciplinary points accumulation, whilst Joe MacVicar and William MacEwan were in the side after missing the encounter between the teams a fortnight earlier.

A large crowd gathered for the game, creating a good atmosphere.

Oban Camanachd took the lead after 11 minutes when Malcolm Clark escaped his marker to score from Daniel MacVicar’s free-hit, awarded after Clark had been hit on the shin.

Malcolm Clark got his and Oban Camanachd’s second on 36 minutes, netting from close range.

Daniel MacVicar added a third with three first half minutes remaining, with a snapshot on the half-volley from 15 yards out and it remained 3-0 until the break.

Oban Celtic trailed 7-0 at the same stage a fortnight earlier so this was progress.

Garry Lord came on to play the final 30 minutes on the wing for Oban Camanachd

whilst schoolboy Logan Black, in defence, and Scott Campbell also came off the bench.

Only one goal was scored in the second half. On 71 minutes, Matthew Sloss made a terrific run from inside his own half, down the Oban Camanachd right. Sloss cut back with the goal in sight, but Malcolm Clark went to shoot at the same time. The ball broke for Daniel MacVicar at the back post and he slotted it home to make it 4-0. The win takes Oban Camanachd through to the Artemis Macaulay Cup quarter finals where they will play Kyles Athletic at Mossfield on Saturday June 8.

Speaking after the game, Oban Camanachd manager Gareth Evans said: “We weren’t at our best and were wasteful. Celtic will probably take more encouragement from the game than us. I thought Celtic’s Finlay Cameron played very well, as did their whole defence.

“We were guilty of overcrowding up front when we should have spread play more so, overall disappointing, but we did have a clean sheet and no fresh injuries.

“It was good to have Garry Lord back after three years

out following an injury.” This Saturday, Oban Camanachd, sponsored by TSL Contractors, play Newtonmore in a Mowi Premiership match at Mossfield.

It is the first of two meetings in 14 days between the sides as they also clash in the Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup second round at Mossfield on Saturday May 25.

Gareth Evans added: “I hope we’ll have Lewis Cameron back for the Newtonmore game. We missed him up front.”

Oban Celtic are in Ferguson Transport & Shipping Balliemore Cup action on Saturday when they host Mowi South Division 1 side Ardnamurchan.

Col-Glen 2 Kyles Athletic 4

Kyles Athletic won 4-2 against Col-Glen in their derby at Glendaruel.

Kyles led through James Pringle after three minutes but Sam Bulloch got a goal past visiting stand-in keeper Innes Macdonald on nine minutes.

The home side hit the front through Sam Bulloch again on 41 minutes but a second from James Pringle a minute later made it 2-2 at the break.

An unfortunate Kyle Kerr own goal put Kyles back in front a minute into the second half and Roddy Macdonald made it 4-2 a couple of minutes after the hour.

Kyles will be concerned by a hamstring injury suffered by Andrew King.

Inveraray 4 Glasgow Mid Argyll 4 After extra time GMA won 4-3 on penalties

Glasgow Mid Argyll won through to the next round following a penalty shoot-out after their 4-4 draw against Inveraray in their 3pm throwup at the Winterton.

GMA led after 10 minutes with Finlay MacMillan scoring but Inveraray built up a 3-1 interval lead through Fraser Watt on 22 minutes and Campbell Watt’s brace on 25 and 37 minutes.

Calum Morrison cut the deficit five minutes into the second half and the returning Garry Luke tied the contest at 3-3 on 69 minutes.

GMA took an extra time lead through Craig Anderson on 102 minutes, only for Fraser Watt to get his second at the death, so referee Alec MacVicar took the tie to a penalty shoot-out which GMA won 4-3.

Aberdour 0 Bute 4

Bute won 4-0 against Aberdour in their 3pm throw-up at Silversands.

Craig Fisher scored after four minutes with what proved to be the only goal of the first half.

Iain McDonald added a second a couple of minutes after the hour and Josh Cowan on 83 minutes and a second from Iain McDonald a couple of minutes from time completed the scoring.
