Af­ter cus­tomers no­ticed ref­er­ences to au­dio record­ing in the com­pany’s pri­vacy pol­icy, an Amer­i­can mat­tress com­pany has pub­licly re­as­sured peo­ple that it is not hid­ing mi­cro­phones in their beds. Please add this to the grow­ing list of ‘pub­lic state­ments for our time.’

The restau­rant chain Frankie and Benny’s has an­nounced a ban on mo­bile phones at its ta­bles. Are phones the new cig­a­rettes? Is it the next pub­lic health scan­dal, with the very real threat of sec­ond­hand phone sig­nal now some­thing to be feared?

RIP the won­der­ful Rookie, the on­line mag­a­zine that Tavi Gevin­son launched aged 15. Her good­bye note is so mov­ing, both in the way it de­scribes the re­al­ity of try­ing to keep some­thing good alive, and in re­veal­ing the way ‘con­tent’ to­day must al­ways be a means to an end.
