Bri­tain joins the Euro­pean Eco­nomic Com­mu­nity, or Com­mon Mar­ket. Ed­ward Heath, above cen­tre, af­ter over­com­ing years of French hos­til­ity, signs the ac­ces­sion treaty in Brus­sels in 1972. The Con­ser­va­tive party lead­er­ship at this time were en­thu­si­as­tic cheer­lead­ers for the Euro­pean project, though there was a small nu­cleus of Tory anti-mar­ke­teers.
