The sug­ges­tion that meat-eat­ing and fly­ing should be ra­tioned to re­duce per­sonal car­bon emis­sions is a wel­come sliver of the kind of re­al­ism that is des­per­ately needed if we are to stand any chance of lim­it­ing global tem­per­a­ture rise (“We ban cannabis but let peo­ple eat as much meat as they want”, Com­ment, last week) .

Such con­straints on free­dom to con­sume may not be ap­peal­ing but they are as noth­ing in com­par­i­son with the suf­fer­ing that cli­mate break­down would bring. Teresa Bel­ton Nor­wich
