The Oldie

Non-payers supreme

-

SIR: Further to your piece about failing to buy a round (‘Yes – the next one’s on you’, May issue), a group of about ten of us used to meet regularly one night a week in a pub for drinks and supper. One couple were notorious for never buying a round.

The wife went round the table taking everyone’s order for supper and relayed it to the bar. At the end of the evening she went round again and collected everyone’s money for their supper and took that to the bar. People put down the money due and £2 or £3 extra for tips.

It was not until the publican, being tipsy, accused the party of being stingy and never tipping the waitresses that we discovered that for years not only had this couple never bought a round, they used the tips to pay for their suppers.

Be warned. Isobel Barker, Torpoint, Cornwall.
