Me and Princess Galitzine

-

SIR: I read with interest your report on the Memorial Service of Princess George Galitzine (April issue). In the late Fifties I worked at French of London (the best of hairdressing salons) in Curzon Place and both Jean Dawney and Princess Galitzine (senior) were clients. One day I was crossing the foyer when a hand grabbed my arm, bringing me to a sudden halt. It was Princess Galitzine senior, a formidable autocratic lady who knew what she wanted and usually succeeded in obtaining her objective. For once she smiled at me and asked, ‘Miss Miller, who is that beautiful lady standing by the window?’ I followed her gaze. ‘Oh! You mean Jean Dawney one of England’s top models?’ Her voice softened. ‘I would love her to meet my son!’

‘Would you like me to introduce you?’ I asked. ‘That would be kind of you, Miss Miller,’ she drawled, as I led her over towards the window.

‘Miss Dawney, may I introduce Princess Galitzine, who requested an introduction, and Princess Galitzine may I introduce you to Miss Jean Dawney,’ I said, and left them to it. I thought little

about it until the wedding announcement in the newspapers some months later. Lorraine Judge, Beckenham, Gt London.
