Old ordure

SIR: I think Richard Osborne (Music, April issue) will find that Sir Thomas Beecham’s reference to having trod in something unpleasant was aimed at the Russian composer Alfred Schnittke. It sounds much closer to the substance underfoot. I’m sure he had a similar comment in his repertoire for Stockhausen. Peter Kingswood, Aberystwyth.
