Four clues lack definition parts; answers to three of these form the name of a person born 150 years ago this June. The fourth consists of an indication of part of the name of a 20 (unclued) of which the person in question was the 7 (unclued). Each of nine clues consists of definitions of two words of different lengths. In five cases, the entry is the shorter word, created by removing a letter from the longer one; in four cases, the entry is the longer word, created by adding a letter to the shorter one. Thematically removed letters travel, in a way described by the indicated part of the 20’s name, to form the rest of that name; in doing so, four of these letters become the thematically added ones. Numbers in brackets refer to lengths of entries.
