We hear plenty about young peo­ple look­ing for jobs but be­ing of­fered only work ex­pe­ri­ence. There are laws, but ex­emp­tions make them easy to cir­cum­vent.

Older peo­ple are ap­plauded for their wis­dom and hands-on ex­pe­ri­ences, but in­vited to share them freely. At least Ben Whit­taker, played by Robert De Niro in

The In­tern, was a vol­un­teer, an ex­ec­u­tive bored by re­tire­ment.

But re­tired teach­ers, busi­ness­men and as­sorted pro­fes­sion­als know the mantra. It is a con­temptible prac­tice that will stop only when young and old say no. Don’t hold your breath. COLIN RAN­DALL
