The Oldie

Hardly a laughing matter

-

SIR: Having read and thoroughly enjoyed a couple of copies of The Oldie, I took out a subscription. I subsequently received a free copy of The Best of the Oldie and was staggered that, in a climate of increased persecution of Christians around the world (more than 2,000 have been killed for their faith so far in 2018 according to the World Watch List), you had chosen to publish a full-page cartoon with the martyrdom of Christians as your ‘humorous’ theme.

Should you feel that readers such as myself fall short of your sense of fun, perhaps you might ask yourself how appropriate a cartoon of the slaughter of Muslims in Serbia might be. It would rightly receive a stroke from the editor’s pen. In that case, why should the death of Christians be a source of such amusement? Rev John Glass, Pamington, Gloucestershire
