Anglo-saxon attitude

-

SIR: In the February issue, the Old Un requested information on the use of the heading ‘Anglo-saxons’ in a Parisian bookshop. The French use this phrase to denote anything related to British civilisation, in this case the English language. It is a phrase that is not always used positively, as the French hate the idea that their language and culture might be diluted by the Anglo-saxons! Christine Gerrard, France
