SIR: Your account of John Woodcock’s funeral service (October issue) reminds me of his comment on the England and Nottingham­shire batsman Derek Randall, which I treasure as the best single sentence in the history of cricket reporting. I think I have it by heart:

‘Randall made 0 and 1 in the first Championsh­ip match of the season, against Northampto­nshire, but was less successful in the second, against Middlesex.’ Peter Hollindale, York
