The Orkney Islander

PROMOTING THE BEST FOOD AND DRINK ON THE MARKET

- WORDS: Adam Johnston

From a small Scottish archipelago, to dinner tables and bar-tops across every corner of the globe, Orkney food and drink has become synonymous with high-quality produce on the world stage. Orkney knows how to extract the utmost potential of farmed and fished goods, with a history and timeless heritage wound up in the land and sea.

Whether it be the tried and tested traditional methods that produce some of the finest spirits and brews, or the labours of farmers whose skills have passed down the generations into prime beef and lamb, our islands stand tall in this competitive industry.

Orkney has attracted many celebrity chefs, who have been inspired to create original recipes, as well as sing the praises of our products. Indeed, Saturday Kitchen’s James Martin described Orkney Vinegar as “the best vinegar you can buy,” and many others swear by our fresh, quality food and drink.

Much of Orkney’s produce may be rooted in tradition, however the businessmen and women of Orkney Food and Drink (OFD), founded in 1994, ensure that the county’s produce and reputation is always at the cutting edge of new innovations.

OFD is a membership organisation, with the aim of promoting and continuing the growth of the county’s food and drink industry through a commitment to quality. They strive to improve standards with regards to production facilities, manufacturing processes, human resources and more.

Whether it’s helping to propel fledgling businesses to take flight, or bolstering the reputations of long-standing cornerstones like Highland Park whisky, The Orkney Brewery or Orkney Cheese, the Orkney name represents the best of the county, and OFD recognises this and ensures protection of Orkney as a brand. Recent developments with the organisation include a partnership with Orkney.com — the organisation’s new home online, where you will find all things “Taste of Orkney.”

The success of local products benefit from the carefully crafted reputation for high standards established by Orkney producers.

Just as the ancestors of Orkney were undeterred by tempests and the challenge of the rough sea, so are the businessmen and women of Orkney Food and Drink undefeated by the challenges first brought in the year 2020. It is hoped that the flagship Taste of Orkney Festival can take place in September, rescheduled from last year, to ensure that Orkney’s finest can be enjoyed to the fullest.

Folk can participate themselves by voting in the Taste of Orkney Awards for 2020/21, by heading to www.orkney.com/life/industry/taste, in categories from Best Meat-based Product and Best Drink to Best Café or Tearoom.

As many have found new footing online to offset the difficulties posed by visiting restrictions, so too has OFD, who have been working tirelessly to bring digital updates in lieu of their event-led programme. They’re also taking part in an online trade event, which is to last all year.
