The Orkney Islander

ISLAND ADVENTURES, JUST A FERRY AWAY

-

There is plenty to do and see across the Mainland of Orkney, but a trip to the outer islands is a must. Many of the county’s north and south isles are serviced by regular air and ferry services operating all year round, although the effects of the pandemic led to widespread alterations in 2020.

We ask that before you take a trip, you’ve checked that services are running as normal, and that you adhere to current booking and travel policies.

Orkney Ferries operates from Kirkwall Harbour, with vessels sailing to Westray, Papa Westray, Stronsay, Eday, Sanday, Shapinsay and North Ronaldsay.

From Houton, in Orphir, you can sail to Hoy and Flotta, while the ferry from Stromness travels to Graemsay and north Hoy.

The ferry from Tingwall takes you to Rousay, Egilsay and Wyre. If you are planning a trip to any of the isles, just drop by or call the shipping company’s office at Kirkwall’s pierhead, to get an up-todate timetable and sailing prices.

Orkney was delighted to receive news this year that cheaper internal ferry fares will be introduced, thanks to a new Scottish Government ferry-funding deal — great news for islanders and visitors alike!

Meanwhile, Loganair flies from Kirkwall Airport to six of the isles — Westray, Papa Westray, Stronsay, Sanday, Eday and North Ronaldsay. visit www.loganair.co.uk for up-to-date information.
