The Pickaquoy Centre is Orkney’s premier leisure facility, offering a huge range of services and activities for families and individuals to enjoy.
Many of our services have become restricted or temporarily closed in response to the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. Below we have listed what activities and services we offer when restrictions are not in place. As we are all currently living in an ever-changing environment, it is essential that you check our website for up-todate information and availability before coming to the facility as some of our services may not be available.
At the time of this advertorial, we have implemented a number of changes within our facility to keep customers and staff safe such as mandatory face coverings, hand sanitisers, one-way systems and an enhanced cleaning schedule.

Swimming
Our main pool consists of a six-lane, 25-metre swimming pool, offering both recreational and lane swimmers a high-quality place to exercise and train. Our timetable also includes a variety of sessions such as aqua walking, chill-out sessions, ladies-only sessions, Aqua Zumba and more.
Families can enjoy our Leisure Pool with fun water features and a slide for children of all ages. In addition, our main pool offers inflatable sessions for children, including a 15m-long ‘Commando Run’ obstacle course, sevenmetre-long “Dive & Slide” and “Water Walkerz” each Sunday from 2.15 – 3.15pm, with more on offer throughout the holidays.
Our health suite, including a sauna, steam room and spa, is open daily and gives you the chance to unwind and fully relax.
Gym
Our gym provides customers with state-of-the-art Life fitness cardio machines, integrated with the most up-todate Life Fitness on Demand workouts to give customers a high-quality training session. The gym also offers a fantastic range of resistance and free weight areas, making the facility a versatile training zone for all levels of fitness.
Fitness Classes
Visitors looking to keep up their fitness during their stay can attend one of our group exercise classes. The range of classes include strength, cardio, mind & body and aqua-based classes. They are designed for all abilities and are led by friendly and fully qualified instructors who are on hand to offer advice and encouragement.
New to our Group X timetable is our outdoor fitness class, held outside on the centre premises, comprising running, walking, bodyweight exercises and a lot of fun! In addition, we now have an online classes platform, Picky @ Home, where individuals can purchase a weekly membership and gain access to the full library of classes available at a time that suits them.
Sports
Our eight-badminton court-sized arena is home to many sports. Badminton, basketball, table tennis, volleyball, netball, walking football and climbing are just a small selection of the activities that take place in this multi-purpose facility. Visitors can hire a court at their leisure for a game of badminton, table tennis, or any of the other activities listed. The centre also has three glass-backed squash and racketball courts, with retractable walls allowing courts to be widened to create either three single courts, two double courts or one multifunctional activity area. Players can borrow rackets at the time of booking with their court hire and purchase squash or racketballs from reception.
Outside the centre, we offer Orkney’s only 400-metre, six-lane synthetic running track, available for public use.
Climbing & Bouldering
For the more adventurous, the Centre offers an indoor climbing wall and bouldering cave. The wall has a diverse and challenging range of routes and features, including constant angles like slabs, vertical walls and overhangs which are designed to develop key climbing skills and techniques.
Our bouldering room, the cave, offers users the opportunity to partake in a dynamic and exciting sport without ropes giving the climber a 360-degree experience. The area was completely refurbished and extended near the end of 2019, and offers a much-improved and flexible bouldering experience.
Wellness & Beauty Treatments
For all of your relaxation and beauty needs, our Wellness & Beauty area offers everything from manicures and pedicures to sports and relaxation massages and alternative therapies, or you can treat yourself to a session on our sunbed. All of our health and beauty therapists are highly qualified and are available to offer tailored treatments.
Soft Play and Inflatables
Directly adjacent to the Picky Café is Jungle World, a purpose-built small adventure soft play area. Jungle World offers children up to the age of five a fun and safe environment, where they can let their imaginations run wild as they explore the ball pool and log slide, swing from the vines or get musically creative on the jungle drums.
If you have children over the age of five, our fantastic selection of large inflatables are great for older children and toddlers alike. Jungle Run is a 15m-long inflatable obstacle course for children over the age of five. Jungle Kingdom is a large jungle themed bouncy house and is suitable for children up to 15 years, and Farm Playzone is a farm-themed toddlers inflatable play area complete with ball pool and soft play animals.
Picky Holiday Camp
We offer holiday camp for children 5–12 years of age during school holidays. The camp runs from 8.30am – 3.30pm each weekday and offers a large variety of activities that include swimming, arts and crafts, physical activies and games. The camp is perfect for keeping children entertained and stimulated for parents who wish to have a day exploring the island.
The Phoenix Cinema
Orkney’s only digital 3D cinema, the Phoenix Cinema, is located within the centre and shows the latest movie releases all year round. In addition, we offer special screenings of foreign language films, independent and world cinema through Phoenix Fringe. The cinema also broadcasts live theatre performances from companies such as the Royal Opera House and Royal Shakespeare Company.
Within the cinema, there are three wheelchair bays, an induction loop for the hearing impaired and infrared headsets offering hearing assistance and audio description on compatible films. We also show a number of subtitled and relaxed screenings each month to make our cinema accessible for all.
Picky Café
The Picky Café has been recently refurbished and offers a new menu using local produce available in Orkney. Offering a range of healthy and convenient food and drink choices, Picky Café is the perfect place to refuel before or after a busy day of sight-seeing. The menu includes vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options, as well as a children’s menu. We offer a large range of takeaway items for those on the go who are keen to get out and enjoy Orkney’s beautiful landscape, and are proud to serve our takeaway food and drink in environmentally friendly Vegware products to help reduce waste.
Camping
Our four-star campsite, Orkney Caravan Park, is part of the Pickaquoy Centre and is ideally located adjacent to the Centre and within walking distance of the town centre and local shops. The picturesque campsite offers the perfect location to pitch a tent or park a caravan or motorhome, where electrical hook-up is available.
Within the amenities block, visitors will have access to a comfortable lounge, laundry facilities, kitchen, free Wi-fi, twelve individual showers and an accessible family shower with baby changing facilities. The campsite is dog friendly and there is an adventure playpark directly next to the campsite available for children.
