NEW HORIZONS AT DEERNESS DISTILLERY
Deerness, a unique and stunning section of the East Mainland, is home to an artisan distillery, which has achieved plenty of success creating and cultivating spirits of the highest order. This year will see Deerness Distillery take a huge step forward, as they add whisky to their range, and open an expansioned distillery which will house a café, bar and expanded shop.
It has been a true labour of love for Stuart and Adelle Brown, who have seen their dream of creating artisan spirits in this unique corner of Orkney, blossom into UK, and now European, success.
This will be just their eighth year of operation, and for Orkney’s first new distillery for over 130 years, it will be a significant one.
“Whisky distilling was always the aim,” says managing director Stuart.
Now by adding whisky distilling equipment and bespoke cask storage, they are soon set to become embedded in Orkney’s rich whisky heritage, when they fill their first casks later a spicy lemon cassia bark. this year. Vára Gin rounds off their gin trio, a refreshing

Seas Fleet in Scapa Flow, and it is juniper led with the Deerness Distillery is on yourorkney to-d- o list.
Scapa Distillery is one of Scotland’s bestkept secrets, hiding in plain sight in its stunning location, with an unparalleled view of Scapa Flow from the high cliffs. It is responsible for producing a rare, fresh, sweet dram of whisky, enjoyed only by those in the know.
Scapa is an artisanal single malt, forged by the extreme elements of Orkney.
Founded in 1885, by Robert Macfarlane and Joseph Townsend, the distillery — nestled on the outskirts of Kirkwall — now has a worldwide reputation, reaching far out beyond the shores of Orkney.
Scapa is recognised for its smooth texture, amber colour, and sweet nectar taste.
Its malted barley is entirely unpeated, which makes for quite an unusual and unique-tasting whisky. Crafted by a small team of dedicated artisans, Scapa uses traditional methods, perfected over generations, and is one of the last remaining manually operated distilleries manned 24 hours a day.
In 2023, a new part of the distillery was opened. The Scapa Noust is a bespoke tasting room designed to comfortably fit 12 people, allowing tasting experiences whilst overlooking the famous Scapa Flow. Owing to the talents of local artisans and local builders, it melds into the landscape as if it has always been there.
