The Orkney Islander

CREATIVE TO THE CORE

- WORDS: Ethan Flett PHOTOGRAPHS: Orkney.com

Orkney’s diverse creative sector offers something for everyone, thanks to the artists and makers of all kinds who call our islands home.

From jewellery, knitwear and pottery, to art, tapestry and furniture, gifted folk of all ages are keeping the islands’ traditions alive, as well as adding new twists and inspiration to the local creative industry.

Visitors would be forgiven if they didn’t know where to start exploring this vibrant part of Orkney life but, thanks to the Creative Orkney Trail, the perfect guide is at hand.

Along the way, you’ll meet the county’s craftsmen and women who merge techniques tested over hundreds of years with some of the latest innovations in creative processes.

From the long-established art of Orkney chair making, to stateof-the-art knitting equipment that keeps manufacturing local, one thing is constant — the quality.

Products made in Orkney are made to last, as sustainability is firmly at the core of everything that goes on in the sector. Turning reclaimed wood into the most stunning handmade furniture, and upcycling couch leather into designer handbags are just a hint of the work that is done locally.

Creative Orkney is the organisation that brings together our professionals in art, craft and design, to promote, support and develop high-quality, design-led creative work.

Founded in 1991, Creative Orkney is run by its members, each of producing quality art, craft and design pieces — all created here in the county.

Many have studied their discipline to a high level, and several have over 20 years’ experience of working and exhibiting their pieces within the creative sector.

Such is the range of creative work in Orkney, it would be difficult to know where to begin, but fear not — help is at hand.

In 1995, the original Orkney Crafts Association created the Orkney Craft Trail. Renamed the Creative Orkney Trail, the route leads visitors to workshops, where they have the chance to talk directly to makers and to find

out how their products are made.

It really is a window into the life, skills and work environment of the people who make these inspiring and beautiful products.

Along the creative trail, the range of experiences is truly excellent. Many of the county’s creatives are now providing a wide range of workshops giving people the chance to try their hand at making something special to take home with them — with the best expert guidance alongside.

Visits like these are a great opportunity to discuss commissioning bespoke work too.

You can also meet the sector’s leading lights at the many events which Creative Orkney holds throughout the year (advertised on the Creative Orkney Facebook page www.facebook.com/ creativeorkneytrail).

But, if you miss out on any must-have items when you’re visiting Orkney, make sure to check out our creative companies online, where global selling and shipping is on offer.
