Exploring the unique charm of Stromness, a beautiful network of narrow flagstone streets, mysterious lanes, piers and slipways, can be an exhilarating experience. So what better way to explore every inch of this old maritime town at your own pace than by becoming a temporary local?

In a new tour offering — designed to showcase the harbour town and an opportunity to delve deeper into its past, its present and its future, and really get a feel for Stromness — you can now join a local guide, for a three-hour stroll through the town.

Explore the winding streets that follow the shoreline. Travel through the town’s network of quaint alleyways, or closes as we say in Orkney. Get under the skin of the town’s rich tapestry of maritime past, which includes pirates, whalers and explorers. Maybe even get a feel for contemporary Stromness, a world-leading hub of marine renewable energy research and technology, with a thriving cultural scene.

Strolling through Stromness is the perfect way in which to uncover just what makes the town so unique, and a joy for visitors and locals alike.

On this roaming tour, your guide will draw attention to the many historical landmarks and stunning viewpoints, as well as shops, businesses and eateries.

The tour will also tap into the town’s cultural heritage, and includes curatorial tours of the five-star Pier Arts Centre and the Stromness Museum, one of the oldest independent museums in the UK.

“We wanted to showcase Stromness from a local perspective, and highlight our past, present and also future aspirations, balancing the historic town with the thriving community,” says Janette Park, curator at Stromness Museum.

“Unique to this tour are curatorial tours of the museum and Pier Arts Centre by their own staff. Who knows the collections better than the local people who work with, and care for, them every day?”

Your ticket entitles you to special offers from selected local shops and eateries highlighted along the way.

Flat, comfortable footwear and appropriate clothing for the walk and the weather conditions are recommended.

Numbers are limited to 12 people per tour, and each tour starts from the ferry terminal.
