A DAD and his toddler daughter had an amazing escape yesterday when a freight train hit their car on a level crossing.

The 16-month-old girl was rescued from a rear seat of the wrecked Peugeot 307 by passers-by.

Her father and another adult in the car were taken to hospital but are thought to be unharmed. Police have arrested the driver on suspicion of dangerous driving after the accident at Trimley St Martin, Suffolk.

Rescuer Lloyd Welham, 48, said: “I got the baby out and passed her across the carriages to someone.”

His fiancee Kerry Donoghue, 46, who also went to help, said: “All the windows were smashed and the air bags had gone off. How she escaped without a scratch is unbelievable.”
