Boris s secret marriage deal
JOHNSONS AGREED TO STAY WED TO GET HARD BREXIT Wife didn’t want split to take attention away from Brexit
BORIS Johnson’s wife confronted him about being unfaithful months ago – but they agreed not to divorce until after Brexit.
A source claims Marina Wheeler feared a public split would detract from her husband’s role in the negotiations.
Only when Johnson quit the cabinet over Theresa May’s Chequers plan did the pair begin divorce proceedings.
The former Foreign Secretary’s friendship with Tory aide Carrie Symonds was said to be the final straw.
Our source said: “Boris apparently told Carrie before the divorce was under way that Marina had confronted him about being unfaithful again.
“She was shocked but he assured her the news would not come out until after Brexit because of an agreement they had.”
It’s claimed Brexiter Carrie, 30, was forced out as Tory communications chief when the PM’S aides became concerned she was too close to Johnson’s camp.
Our insider added that top QC Marina – also a passionate supporter of leaving the EU – thought a messy divorce could affect the country’s Brexit deal.
The source added: “Marina has never made any secret of her opinion that hard Brexit is what is best for the country and her legal profession.
“Towards the end it was one of the key things she and Boris still agreed on.
“She is aware of Boris’s ability to become a caricature and she didn’t want their break-up to add to that.
“She was also very aware the pantomime around her split with Boris could easily take attention away from Brexit.
“It seems it was only when she realised that Boris had bowed out of the negotiations and gone against May that she realised there was less to lose.”
Boris and Marina, both 54, wed in 1993 and had four children together but the marriage was blighted by his affairs.
