Is-fight­ing Brit jailed

A FOR­MER Bri­tish sol­dier has been jailed for sev­e­nand-a-half years in Turkey, ac­cused of fight­ing against Is­lamic State ter­ror­ists.

Joe Robin­son, 25, from Ac­cring­ton, Lan­cashire, was the first Bri­ton to be ar­rested over help­ing Kur­dish forces against IS.

He spent four weeks as a com­bat medic with the Peo­ple’s Pro­tec­tion Units of Syr­ian Kur­dis­tan in 2015.

Turks are an­gry at their links to fight­ers for Kur­dish au­ton­omy in Turkey.

Robin­son was held on a fam­ily hol­i­day in Turkey in July last year. His fam­ily has ap­pealed for Theresa May to help to win his re­lease.

He toured Afghanistan with the Duke of Lan­caster’s Reg­i­ment in 2012 be­fore go­ing to Syria.

About 700 Bri­tons are thought to have joined IS, in­clud­ing girls. Only a hand­ful have been charged with ter­ror of­fences.
