UNI­VER­SI­TIES are be­ing urged to in­tro­duce men­tal health strate­gies to stop stu­dents killing them­selves.

Nearly 100 took their own lives dur­ing the last aca­demic year.

Uni­ver­si­ties Min­is­ter Sam Gy­imah has de­manded all heads pri­ori­tise men­tal health as 400,000 fresh­ers start their stud­ies this week.

He wrote: “I ex­pect each se­nior lead­er­ship team to de­liver pos­i­tive change.

“Ad­vanc­ing a stu­dent’s ed­u­ca­tion is not your only com­mit­ment to them.”

The dan­ger signs in­clude self-harm, al­co­hol or drug abuse and debt. Staff are told to be aware of stu­dents strug­gling with work­loads, re­la­tion­ship prob­lems or be­ing away from home.
