Few’ hero Bob dead
ONE of the last Battle of Britain heroes has died at the age of 97.
Flight Lieutenant William “Bob” Hughes was 18 when he joined the RAF Volunteer Reserve in the spring of 1939.
In 1940 he helped defend Britain from Nazi invasion as an air-gunner with the night-fighter Blenheims of 23 Squadron.
Flt Lt Hughes, from Northampton, went on to survive two operational tours in bombers and won the Distinguished Flying Cross in 1943.
David Brocklehurst, chairman of the Kent Battle of Britain Museum, said l ast night: “RIP Bob Hughes. Your duty is done.”
Only seven Battle of Britain v e t e r a ns – Churchill’s gallant “Few” – are still alive today.
