Stars’ plea over £3.5bn party gear

- By Karen Rockett

PARTYGOERS will spend £3.5billion on new clothes for Christmas but eight million items will be worn only once.

New research reveals that 65 per cent of Brits will buy at least one new garment for the festivities, paying an average £106.

But a quarter of those say they will never wear it a second time, according to the charity Oxfam.

Supermodel Kate Moss, Saturdays star Una Healy, singer Ellie Goulding, Killing Eve star Jodie Comer and designer Stella Mccartney are all backing the charity’s campaign for sustainable partywear.

Una, 37, who donated a shimmery evening gown, said: “The Oxfam Online shop is a huge treasure trove of vintage, sparkly and one-off pieces and you can do your bit for those living in poverty too.”

The fashion industry is responsible for 92 million tons of waste every year.
