A fair kip! Burglars fake sleep as cops swoop

- By Karen Rockett

FOUR dozy teenage burglars pretended to be asleep in bed when they realised police would catch them red-handed.

Officers found the lads tucked up on two mattresses in a house, surrounded by jewellery and other gear in their haul.

All denied knowing each other or having any involvement in the break-in in June. But they were found guilty and jailed for a total of seven years two months at Luton crown court.

Det Con Andrew Boston said: “This was one of the more unusual cover stories for a group of burglars that I’ve encountered but, unfortunately for them, our officers didn’t buy it.”

They were caught after police went to investigate reports of a group of young people acting suspiciously in Leighton Buzzard, Beds. Seth Lee, 19, of Leighton Buzzard, was jailed for 40 months, Patrick Casey, 19, of Dunstable, got 24 months, and Mark Boyce, 19, of Dunstable, was locked up for 22 months.

A boy of 16 who cannot be named or pictured for legal reasons will be sentenced later.

Boyce received a shorter sentence for returning a stolen watch.
