Henry VIII £20k note
A 16TH century letter from King Henry VIII has sold at auction for £20,000.
Thought to date to 1541, it is signed Henry R and has the remains of a wax seal.
The note was sent to garrison commanders in Hull, East Yorks, asking for new master gunner Thomas King to be paid 8p a day.
It smashed its £ 12,000 guide price last week.
Auct ion eers Christie’s London said: “Henry visited Hull in 1541 and made extensive orders for its fortification and garrisoning.”
