Birth of JC is too PC for me
I STILL remember the burning sense of injustice when Susan Willis got the gig as Mary in our school nativity play.
I was six and landed Melchior instead. But my crown fell into the manger as I bowed to give gold to baby Jesus. So Susan Willis chucked it off the stage. Oh, the humiliation. But I still grew to love the annual nativity show and played shepherds, a star and an angel.
I’m sure today’s kids have just as much fun, even though 48 per cent of schools this year opted for a “modern” take on the Christmas story.
A poll shows 2018’s Nativity roles have included a space monkey, a piece of grass, an Ofsted inspector, a morris dancing chicken and, erm, Declan Donnelly? The Three Wise Men are probably already three wise people of non-binary gender.
Schools must move with the times and reflect changing attitudes. But forgetting the traditional story of Christ’s birth altogether would be a real injustice.
