ONCE upon a time, Manchester United had a Latin motto – ‘Concilio et Labore’ – on their shirts.

Adopted from the city’s crest, it has been often translated as ‘by wisdom and effort’ (some taking ‘consilium’ for ‘concilium’), though ‘by union and effort’ would perhaps be a little closer and appropriate.

Whatever the case, all three of those qualities have often been in scant supply this season on United’s part, but today’s trip to Anfield requires them in abundance.

Having said that, the last two league visits of the Manchester side
