Axe urged on Brexit ferry deal

- By Nigel Nelson POLITICAL EDITOR

CHRIS Grayling has been urged to scrap his £14million Brexit contract with a ferry firm that has no ships.

The Transport Secretary signed Seaborne Freight to operate services between Ramsgate in Kent and Belgium, to help ease any pressure on Dover in the event of a no-deal departure from the EU.

Shadow Transport Secretary Andy Mcdonald has now written to him to call for a rethink.

His letter states: “It is clear this contract and the company i t has been awarded to is unsuitable and should be revoked immediately.

“I’m astonished you awarded it to a company with no money, no ships, no track record, no employees, no ports, one telephone line, and no working website or sailing schedule.”

He also accuses Mr Grayling of not doing due diligence on the deal.

The letter adds: “You effectively gifted the company the work without any form of competition.”
