Ketch up on 150yrs

- By Stephen Hayward

THE nation’s favourite ketchup is celebrating its 150th birthday.

Henry Heinz was 25 when he launched his company in the US in 1869.

Today more than 650 million bottles of Heinz ketchup are sold every year in 140 countries.

The tomato sauce arrived in Britain at upper- crust London department store Fortnum & Mason in 1886.

Impressed by its taste, the head of grocery declared: “We’ll take the lot.”

Then in 1914 salad cream became the first Heinz product developed exclusively for the UK.

Despite being bombed twice, the Heinz factory in Harlesden, North London, kept going throughout the Second World War.

In 1951 Heinz got its royal warrant and in 1955 the first TV ad for its 57 varieties was screened.

While on tour in Ohio, singer Ed Sheeran had the Heinz ketchup l abel tattooed on his left bicep.

A source at Heinz said: “He is loud and proud about his love of our tomato ketchup.”

BETTY Goedhart,

86, swung into the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s oldest trapeze artist in Escondido, California.
