Create a stunning rose border

-

NOW is the perfect time to get new roses into the ground – as long as it is not frozen solid.

It is no surprise that roses are the nation’s favourite plant.

With beautiful blooms, amazing fragrance and the chance to proudly cut your own flowers, you can’t go far wrong.

Take your pick

You can usually buy roses in two forms – pre-grown in pots and containers or bare root, where they are grown in the ground and then dug up, wrapped and sold. But the latter is your cheaper option because they are quicker and easier to produce.

Sun seeker

A sunny, sheltered spot is ideal and do not forget roses need sunshine.

It is always best to pick a spot that has never had roses before because old ones can leave diseases in the soil.

Be sure to dig in plenty of well-rotted manure to ensure the soil is full of nutrients.

There are thousands of varieties to choose from. Either plant in single colours or vary to your taste.

Shape up

GET rid of algae in your birdbath with very hot water and a scouring brush. Fill it with fresh water and change it every three days to keep

disease away.

If you are planting a bed, place them in diagonals rather than straight lines. Put them in at least 18in apart for maximum light and space.

You will see a mark on the stem where the soil was previously. Make sure the knuckle where it has been budded is clear of the soil.

Firm well in and water. As they grow, feed with special rose food.
