Punish the prince call
THE US must sanction Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman after its report into the murder of Jamal Khashoggi, a top UK lawyer said yesterday.
Baroness Helena Kennedy said she was “disappointed” the US had failed to directly punish the Saudi leader after its report concluded he played a part in the decision to capture or kill the journalist.
She was part of a UN team of experts who visited Turkey to investigate the 2018 killing at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.
The Baroness said: “I’m disappointed the US has chosen not to sanction him, because I will be urging the British Government to. This was not – having listened to the tapes – a rogue operation that went wrong.”
The release of the intelligence comes as President Joe Biden plans to recalibrate relations with the Middle East.
Khashoggi, 59, was an outspoken critic of the Saudi government. It is thought he was killed and dismembered soon after entering the consulate.
KIDNAPPERS have freed 42 people, including 27 teenage boys, taken 11 days ago in a 2am raid on a boarding school in Nigeria.
One boy was killed when an armed gang overwhelmed guards at Kagara college in Niger state.
They also kidnapped three staff and 12 members of their families.
Their release yesterday came a day after more than 300 girls were snatched by gunmen in another raid on a school in Zamfara state.
Kidnappings for ransom are common across many northern Nigerian states.
Niger governor Abubakar Sani Bello said: “The abducted students, staff and relatives of Kagara have regained their freedom.”
