Riots over US verdict
PROTESTS have broken out in the US following the acquittal of a teenager who killed two people at a Black Lives Matter demo.
Kyle Rittenhouse, then 17, shot dead two men with an assault rifle and injured a third in Kenosha, Wisconsin, in August 2020.
But a jury accepted his plea of self-defence after a three-week trial.
Some 200 people rioted in Portland, Oregon, yesterday and there were demos in New York and Chicago.
President Joe Biden said the verdict left him “angry and concerned” but urged calm, while Donald Trump congratulated Rittenhouse, adding: “If that’s not selfdefence, nothing is.”
Rittenhouse and his victims are white but the case has reignited debate about guns and racial injustice.
