SNARED BY HIS BID TO CHEAT LIE TEST

Child murderer had also ‘approached young girls’

- By Phil Cardy

DOUBLE child-killer Colin Pitchfork was sent back to prison after spooking probation handlers during lie-detector tests.

We can reveal the fiend’s performance on polygraphs raised grave concerns among officials and hastened moves to recall him to jail.

On Friday justice chiefs said Pitchfork had been put back inside over “concerning behaviour”, just two months after he was freed.

The 61-year-old had also reportedly been approaching young girls while out on long walks. A source said: “Highprofile killers like Pitchfork are subject to really strict monitoring and as part of that they have to undergo regular polygraph tests.

“But the way he approached the tests raised concerns about his behaviour and those monitoring him felt they had to act.”

Pitchfork was caged for a minimum of 30 years in 1987 after raping and strangling 15-year-olds Lynda Mann and Dawn Ashworth in Leicestershire.

Sources say proba

tion staff were concerned at his “bad attitude” after his release but there is no suggestion he has committed a crime.

He will be assessed by the Parole Board again within 28 days – meaning he could in theory be released in the new year.

Pitchfork was ruled suitable for release by the Parole Board in March, sparking outrage from the victims’ families. Some of the relatives want to attend any future hearings.

Lynda’s sister Rebecca Eastwood said: “I will be going if I can.”

The Government also argued at the time of the board’s decision it was “irrational” to let Pitchfork go free and asked for the decision to be re-examined.

But despite the objections he was released from HMP Leyhill in September.

During his time on the outside, Pitchfork was subject to 43 licence conditions including tagging, exclusion zones and a ban on contact with children.
