A spice try from M&S

- By Stephen Hayward

A GINGERBREAD house costing £5.50 from Marks & Spencer has been voted the tastiest, beating more expensive versions of the Christmas treat.

Researchers carried out Bake Off-style tests to compare the gingerbread house kits on flavour and texture and how long they took to make and decorate.

Lakeland’s £12.99 one proved easier than others, while M&S’S offering was rated “truly delicious”.

Which? judges said a £12.50 kit from John Lewis was let down by the premade icing which turned out to be inadequate.

A £7.95 mini gingerbread house kit from Harvey Nichols turned out to be more straightforward and better-suited for kids.

A pricy DIY version from online store Biscuiteers also failed to live up to expectations, despite its £35 price tag.
