Magpies are Edding for a full English
NEWCASTLE boss Eddie Howe wants to prioritise the signing of proven Premier League players over foreign imports.
New head coach Howe, who yesterday missed the first game since his appointment after testing positive for Covid-19, is anxious to boost Toon’s relegation escape bid in the January transfer window.
High-profile overseas stars have been linked with the Magpies after the £305million Saudi-backed takeover was completed last month.
But sources close to the club say that former Bournemouth and Burnley boss Howe’s main focus is on players with a track record in the English top flight.
Those heading into the final six months of their contracts are of particular interest and Burnley centre-back James Tarkowski is in Newcastle’s sights.
The England international, 29, is due to become a free agent next summer and the Geordies face competition from West Ham, but Tarkowski could see out his contract.
Manchester United’s attacking midfielder Jesse Lingard, 28, had an outstanding loan spell with the Hammers last season and has indicated he fancies a return.
But the England man is another potential Toon target with his contract up at the end of the season and negotiations over a new deal stalling.
