Barca set to swoop for Cavani

- Tom Hopkinson

EDINSON CAVANI is among Barcelona’s targets as they look to replace Sergio Aguero.

Former Manchester City star Aguero has been ruled out for most of the season after a heart problem was detected. And there are fears the issue could even end his career.

It means new Barca boss Xavi is on the lookout for a new striker in the January transfer window and Manchester United ace Cavani is seen as an option.

Cavani has been frustrated at Old Trafford since Cristiano Ronaldo’s arrival, having received assurances earlier in the summer the Red Devils were not looking to bring in a striker who would play through the middle.

That changed when Ronaldo became available, though, and the Uruguayan has been restricted in the number of minutes he has got.

At this stage of his career Cavani, 34, wants and needs to play every week and Barca can offer him the chance to do that.

He will be a free agent at the end of the season and Barca – who are also hoping to sign City’s Raheem Sterling on loan with a concrete option to buy him in the summer – are prepared to offer an 18-month contract.

The La Liga giants, who have been beset by financial issues, will offer United a transfer fee of around £4-5million but Inter Milan are also keen on Cavani.
