Martin saves Latics

Oldham 3 Port Vale 2

-

KEITH CURLE hopes Oldham’s “massive” victory over high-flying Port Vale will help change mentalities at the struggling Latics.

Aaron Martin’s late own goal handed Oldham only their second home win of the season after they had twice trailed at Boundary Park.

David Worrall and James Gibbons struck for Vale with Davis Keillordunn and Sam Hart responding before Martin’s decider helped the hosts climb out of the relegation zone. Curle (above) said: “This was a great win for us, and wins can change mentalities and mindsets.

“There’s been some tough times here this season, but that’s when the tough get going. The players in the changing room know that it hasn’t been good enough, but there is definitely plenty of fight in there.

“This a massive win and one we need to take confidence from.”

Vale boss Darrell Clarke said: “We’ve dominated this game, but in the end we’ve not defended our box properly and we’ve been punished badly.

“To be honest I would have been raging if we’d just taken a point from this game, but to have come away with nothing at all is so frustrating.

“We can’t be conceding goals like that and expect to keep our position in the table.”
